Handcrafted Walnut Swan Automaton
Details
Details
Some objects earn a spot on the shelf by sitting still. The Walnut Swan Automaton earns it by moving. Switch it on and the swan settles into a slow, looping glide — a long, unhurried arc that reads like a bird crossing still water at dawn. It is the kind of quiet motion you glance up at between emails, and the room feels a half-step calmer for it.
How it moves
Hidden inside the walnut body is a small battery-driven motor turning a set of precision cams. Those cams translate one steady rotation into the swan's rise-and-settle path, so the movement stays smooth and repeatable rather than stiff or jerky. It runs on a single AAA battery (not included) — no cranking, no cords. Choose the Music version and a built-in music box plays a soft melody in time with the motion; choose No Music for pure, silent gliding. The mechanism is identical either way.

A gift that keeps moving
Because it is both wood and kinetic, the swan lands well for weddings and anniversaries (wood is the traditional fifth-anniversary gift), housewarmings, retirements, and anyone who leans toward calm, minimal decor over clutter. It reads as considered rather than novelty, and it keeps working long after the wrapping paper is gone. Pair it with the rest of our kinetic desk sculptures, or browse the full range of wooden automata to build a small collection.
Questions, answered
What is the difference between the Music and No Music versions?
The mechanism and motion are the same. Music adds a built-in music box that plays a gentle melody as the swan moves; No Music runs silently.
Does it need batteries?
Yes — one AAA battery, not included. There is no crank and no charging cable.
Is it loud?
No. You will hear a soft mechanical hum, a little louder than a wristwatch and easy to tune out. On the Music version the melody covers it almost entirely.
