Most desks could use one genuinely calming object. The Wooden Jellyfish Automaton is built to be that object — a small kinetic desk sculpture whose bell and trailing strands rise and settle in a slow, floating pulse, the way a real jellyfish drifts through a current. It does not demand attention; it just gives you somewhere quiet to rest your eyes for a minute between tasks.

How it moves

A concealed motor drives a layered mechanism that lifts and lowers the jellyfish's strands in sequence, so the motion looks fluid and continuous instead of mechanical. It is designed for silent running, which is the whole point of a piece that lives an arm's length from your keyboard. The battery is rechargeable over USB-C (cable included), so there are no disposable batteries to swap — top it up, set it back down, and let it drift.

Materials & specifications

  • Material: high-quality beech, hand-carved and polished smooth
  • Dimensions: 7.5 × 8 × 20 cm (approx. 3.0 × 3.1 × 7.9 in) — a slim, desk-friendly footprint
  • Weight: about 370 g (13 oz)
  • Power: rechargeable battery, USB-C cable included
  • Sound: non-music — quiet by design
  • Finish: natural grain, unique to each piece

A desk gift with staying power

It is an easy gift for the ocean lover, the aquarium person, the coworker whose desk needs one nice thing, or anyone who spends long hours in front of a screen and could use a small visual break. Tall but narrow, it fits between a monitor and a mug without taking over. See how it sits alongside our other kinetic desk sculptures, or explore the full family of wooden automata.

Questions, answered

Is it actually desk-sized?
Yes. At roughly 7.5 cm wide and 8 cm deep it takes up about the space of a coffee mug, while standing about 20 cm tall.

How is it powered?
An internal rechargeable battery, topped up with the included USB-C cable — no loose batteries to replace.

Is it quiet enough for an office?
Yes. It is a non-music, silent-by-design piece; you will hear only a faint mechanical whisper up close.

    Your Questions, Answered!

The slow, repeatable motion encourages a short, screen-free pause—many owners use it 2–3×/day for 30–60s.

You’ll hear a soft mechanical whirr—slightly louder than a wrist-watch tick but still easy to tune out. On music versions, the melody makes the mechanism virtually unnoticeable.

This model uses an internal rechargeable battery and charges via USB-C.

We recommend avoiding direct contact with high-temperature objects as they can damage the wood. Always use the automata in a stable environment to preserve its quality and lifespan.

Our automata are crafted from high-quality natural wood, such as walnut or beech, selected to highlight the beauty and durability of the material.

To keep your automata in great condition:

    • Avoid direct sunlight and keep it away from heat sources like air conditioners or radiators.

    • Maintain indoor humidity at around 40-60% to prevent cracking or warping.

    • Wipe away water stains or oil spills promptly, and use a slightly damp cotton cloth for regular cleaning.

    • For wax-treated products, apply wood wax oil periodically to enhance protection.
