Handcrafted Wooden Dolphin Automaton
Details
Details
Two dolphins arc through a set of carved waves, chasing each other in a slow, synchronized leap that never quite lands. The Walnut Dolphin Automaton captures that easy, playful ocean rhythm and holds it on your desk — a piece of shoreline motion rendered in solid wood, calm enough to leave running while you work.
How it moves
Under the wave base sits a carefully assembled gear-and-cam mechanism. As it turns, it drives both dolphins along matched paths so their leaps stay in step, tracing a smooth wave-like curve rather than a stiff back-and-forth. It is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery over USB-C — roughly two hours of charging gives up to about five hours of continuous, cord-free motion. No crank, no disposable batteries: charge it, set it down, and let the dolphins run.

A gift for ocean people
It is a natural fit for anyone drawn to the sea — coastal-decor lovers, divers, marine-biology fans, or the person who keeps a beach photo as their wallpaper. As a desk centerpiece it is warm and unfussy, and the wave motion makes it a real conversation piece rather than another paperweight. It sits comfortably among our other kinetic desk sculptures and the wider collection of wooden automata.
Questions, answered
How is it powered, and how long does a charge last?
It has a built-in 400 mAh battery charged via the included USB-C cable. A full charge takes about two hours and gives up to roughly five hours of continuous motion.
Is it one dolphin or two?
Two — a pair of dolphins moving in sync through the carved waves, which is what gives the piece its leaping, wave-like motion.
Is it quiet?
Yes. The motor is light and low; it suits an office or study, with only a faint mechanical sound up close.
